Peat Reduction Round Table at IPM Essen 2026
HORTICERT at the launch of the Peat Reduction Round Table at IPM Essen 2026
As part of IPM Essen 2026, HORTICERT participated in the launch of the Peat Reduction Round Table. The event was organised by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Regional Identity (BMLEH) under the leadership of Parliamentary State Secretary Silvia Breher and marks an important step towards further reducing the use of peat in potting soils and professional growing media.
The Round Table brought together representatives from horticulture, the growing media industry, politics, science, as well as environmental and climate protection organisations. Key topics included the national peat reduction strategy, the climate relevance of phasing out peat use, and the differing requirements and perspectives of the stakeholders involved. In particular, the exchange on potential alternatives to peat and realistic transition pathways highlighted both the complexity of the issue and the progress that has already been achieved.
The Round Table provided valuable insights into the national strategy for reducing peat use, as well as into the diverse perspectives and interests of the participating stakeholders. HORTICERT welcomes the open and constructive dialogue and looks forward to continuing to support discussions on climate‑friendly alternatives and future‑oriented solutions in horticulture.
